Developed jointly by Japanese companies Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, ES Automotive, and Tokyo Electric Power Company, it's no surprise that its name reflects its origins. The word "CHAdeMO" comes from the Japanese phrase "CHArge de MOve," meaning "charging while moving." It also cleverly borrows from the Japanese phrase "O cha demo ikaga desuka," meaning "to drink tea while charging."
The following electric vehicle models can use the CHAdeMO fast charging interface: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Citroën C-Zero, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, Nissan e-NV200, Kia Soul Electric (1st generation), Citroën Berlingo Electric (1st generation), and Tesla Model S (adapter required).

CHAdeMO is a fast direct-current (DC) electric vehicle charging standard created in Japan, mainly used by older Nissan Leafs, Mitsubishi Outlanders, and select Asian models. It is gradually being phased out globally in favor of the Combined Charging System (CCS) and NACS standards.
It is a connector specifically designed for high-power DC charging, which is why you won't find it on the wall-mounted chargers commonly seen at home. The batteries in electric vehicles operate on DC power, meaning the charger can directly supply high-power current to the battery without requiring an onboard charger to convert AC to DC.
CHAdeMO is one of the earliest connector types, jointly developed by Japanese industries and automakers in the early 21st century, thus undergoing thorough practical testing. As a result, it is primarily used in Japanese models such as the Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and Lexus UX 300e. Occasionally, some electric vehicles without a CHAdeMO interface can also be utilized with adapters, such as the Tesla Model S and Model X.
Electric vehicles using the CHAdeMO fast charging standard are primarily Japanese models and early Asian or European models, most notably the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and Mitsubishi i-MiEV.
Tesla Model S and Model X: Older Tesla models can use the Tesla-specific CHAdeMO adapter for traditional fast charging, but supply is limited.
